Block-o-Clock: Golden Girl
Spring feels like it has finally set in for good here in Denver. Temperatures are staying relatively stable, snow is nowhere in sight, and that makes us feel both excited about summer, but, somehow it also means spring is on its way out. One of our favorite drinks from this year (before Corona hit and everything went to shit), was a take on a comfort drink we love, golden milk. For those unfamiliar, traditional golden milk is a traditional Indian drink with Ayurvedic components. It typically includes milk (cow’s milk or an alternative), turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon. In our version called Golden Girl, we use the standard ingredients and add something extra special: booze.
Natasha, one of The Block Distilling Co.’s bartenders, shows us how to make a Golden Girl at home using ingredients you probably already have on hand. This recipe calls for 1oz coconut milk, but you can substitute with almond milk, oat milk, cashew milk, or regular milk.
If you can’t turn fresh coconuts into coconut milk at home, store-bought is fine.
Golden Girl
Ingredients:
1.5 oz vodka or summer gin
1 oz turmeric ginger simple syrup
1 oz coconut milk
0.5 oz lime
0.25 oz orange juice
Turmeric Ginger Simple Syrup
2 teaspoon fresh ginger
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
To begin, prepare your turmeric ginger simple syrup. Combine 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, and 2 teaspoon ginger. Bring to a boil. Continue to boil until ingredients are fully incorporated. Turn off heat, add 1 teaspoon turmeric.
Once your simple syrup has cooled, assemble your Golden Girl.
Add vodka, turmeric ginger simple syrup, coconut milk, lime, and orange juice into a shaker over ice. Shake well. Serve immediately. Enjoy with an orange twist.
Protip: If you make your Turmeric Ginger Simple Syrup ahead of time, be sure to give it a good stir before adding to your drink. Stirring the mixture will re-incorporate the fresh ginger that has settled to the bottom.
