225 Club Recipes: Single Barrel straight rye whiskey

sazerac

Now, this rye can definitely be sipped neat or on a cube but it also holds up delightfully in this classic cocktail that originated in New Orleans. Some claim it is actually the oldest known American cocktail with origins pre-Civil war. The official cocktail of Louisiana features the strong notes of absinthe being balanced with the peppery nature of the rye. It is definitely not an entry-level cocktail but for those that like a complex spirit-forward sipper this is on the top of the list.

DIRECTIONS:

  • 2 oz Rye Whiskey

  • 0.25 oz Single Strength Simple Syrup

  • 5 drops Absinthe or Fennel Anise Tincture

  • 5 drops Peppercorn Clove Tincture

  • 1 dash Peychauds Bitters

Build all of the ingredients in a mixing glass. Add ice and stir for 15-20 seconds. Strain the cocktail into a coupe or martini glass. Express a lemon peel over the cocktail and wipe the rim of the glass with it before dropping it in the drink.
